THE TRADE MARK

The "Pyramid" Trademark, which is placed upon all slate products
of THE STRUCTURAL SLATE COMPANY, was adopted as indica-
tive of the qualities inherent within the slate itself. Proof against "Time,
Wear, Water and Fire" it is prepared to give "Centuries of Service" when
used in those places for which it is eminently well fitted.

THE STRUCTURAL SLATE COMPANY produces and ships un-
der this trademark only that stock which is best selected for the purpose
for which it is to be used. Thus by calling for "Pyramid Brand" slate
the consumer will always be assured not only of the highest uniform
quality of slate possible to obtain, but also of selection by experts who
have spent their lives in the slate quarries and mills.

INTRODUCTORY

Having developed the processes for the extraction of slate from the
ground and the workmanship and finish during manufacture to the high-
est point of efficiency in the production of sanitary products of natural
slate, THE STRUCTURAL SLATE COMPANY feels that a wider
knowledge of the many types of fixtures which may be procured and their
uses and applications is desirable.

Often a material not so well suited for the purpose or not possessing
the sanitary qualities of slate, as well as its characteristics of strength,
cleanliness, resistance to wear, economy in price, etc., is used because of
lack of knowledge as to where the slate can be secured and how it should
be used.

It is the desire to set forth herein the aims and endeavors of THE
STRUCTURAL SLATE COMPANY— its resources, its huge stock of
raw and finished material and its service to the plumbers and other con-
tractors whose chief desire, when ordering material, is to know where it
can be secured most quickly, consistent with highest quality and at the
most economical costs possible with good workmanship.

THE

STRUCTURAL

SLATE

COMPANY

THE STRUCTURAL SLATE COMPANY

In 1918 the majority of the slate quarries in the two counties of
Northampton and Lehigh, State of Pennsylvania, felt the necessity as
well as the desirability of forming an organization which would give to
the purchaser and consumer of slate products that better service which
was needed to stimulate a renewed interest in natural slate — Nature's
most versatile material. Economy in production, storage and shipment
could be obtained only through organized effort. This feeling resulted
in the formation of THE STRUCTURAL SLATE COMPANY, the
member quarries comprising which produce by far the largest portion of
the total shipments of structural slate in this famed Pennsylvania region,
which, in itself, forms the largest slate field in the United States.

Although only formed as THE STRUCTURAL SLATE COM-
PANY in 1918, many of the individual quarries have been in continuous
operation for over fifty years, the oldest having been opened in 1857. As
individual quarries, they have long and faithfully served the building
public. This step of organization has been only taken in the belief that
it will result in a greater service to the ultimate users of slate. Such
greatly improved service which these producers of slate who are mem-
bers of this organization have been able to give by the concentration of
all selling and shipping in the hands of a central authority has already
proved the wisdom of this course.

THE STRUCTURAL SLATE COMPANY has a capitalization of
$250,000.00. This has enabled them to finance the almost continuous
operation of the quarries with an unceasing production of slate. Also
to accumulate and hold always in readiness for immediate delivery enor-
mous quantities of this material, either as slabs or as the finished product.
As an instance, the average number of square feet of structural slate
which is constantly stored and ready for shipment is 250,000 square feet.

THE STRUCTURAL SLATE COMPANY has thus been able to
ameliorate the formerly serious labor problems of the slate quarries by
enabling production to be carried on continuously throughout the year,
instead of each individual quarry employing men from time to time as
orders have been received. This has had the natural and to be desired
result that all of the quarries have been able to reduce the days of idleness
and so keep their better trained mechanics interested sufficiently in their
work to avoid the lure of better jobs at higher pay in other trades. A
consequent economy in production and increase in skill in assembling has
been another immediate benefit, for skilled labor, assured of continuous
employment, no longer has to turn its efforts to other channels.

THE

STRUCTURAL

SLATE

COMPANY

A Slate Quarry in the Famed Pennsylvania Region

At the present time THE STRUCTURAL SLATE COMPANY
comprises quarries whose total production on full time is approximately
5,000,000 square feet in a year. This production capacity is being con-
stantly increased by the opening of more quarries, the construction of
more mills and by the installation of improved machinery and equipment.
Every facility for the production of plumbing fixtures, wainscoting,
floors, stairs and all other forms of slate — electrical, blackboard and
roofing — is contained within these quarries. And all benefits accruing
from this combination of efficiency and equipment is passed on to the
consumer by the Company.

The annual shipments of structural slate by THE STRUCTURAL
SLATE COMPANY have averaged 3,000,000 square feet, which assures
to the consumer buying his material through THE STRUCTURAL
SLATE COMPANY prompt attention to his requirements, for he is se-
curing it from the largest source of available slate.

THE STRUCTURAL SLATE COMPANY

ADVERTISING AND SERVICE

By thus briefly acquainting the purchaser with the size of THE
STRUCTURAL SLATE COMPANY, it is desired also to present to the
plumber a realization of the responsibility and dependability of this or-
ganization. With its large capitalization and with the resources of the
many quarries that form the Company, it is in a position to take care of
any reasonable demands made upon it for materials, workmanship, de-
livery, etc. It continues in a broader sense that policy of serving its
customers which was always the aim of the individual quarry before 1918.

Not the least of the many factors entering into the formation of THE
STRUCTURAL SLATE COMPANY was a realization on the part of
the slate industry that it was necessary to make known to architects, con-
structors, plumbers and building owners and managers the characteris-
tics and the many advantages of slate. It has proved that there was also
the desire on the part of the consuming public to know where to secure
slate and to know more about its characteristics and uses. It had been
found that slate, after all, was infinitely superior to the many substitutes
which had been offered in its place, as well as more economical in produc-
tion, in installation and use. Having served mankind for 2,000 years in
one form or another, slate has behind it the prestige of a long and useful
service.

There was but one form in which information concerning slate prod-
ucts could be brought before those who specify and consume plumbing
fixtures and equipment. That was by means of a national advertising
campaign. Every year, therefore, THE STRUCTURAL SLATE COM-
PANY secures space in the majority of the leading technical publications
which are read by those within the building industry of the United States,
in which it tells and illustrates the story of slate.

This places the name of THE STRUCTURAL SLATE COMPANY
prominently before those who use building materials and equipment, mak-
ing them familiar with the trademark "Pyramid," the brand stamped upon
all slate products sold through this organization. Thus the "Pyramid"
brand slate plumbing fixtures are recognized everywhere as being in ac-
cordance with the highest standards upon which such equipment is based.

This trademark is the mark of service and protection to all plumbers
and plumbing supply houses whose desire is to secure only the best of
materials and workmanship for slate fixtures. It is an indication that the
slate has been properly quarried, selected and assembled and that the
workmanship upon the material is of the highest obtainable.

THE STRUC T URAL SLATE COMPANY

THE STRUCTURAL SLATE COMPANY, in addition to publica-
tion advertising, has likewise for over two years had The Struc-
tural Service Bureau of Philadelphia make a study of every possible
standardization of sizes, parts, assembly and installation of all plumbing
fixtures and other products of slate. They have recommended, as a re-
sult of this work, certain sizes and types of W.C. Enclosures, Shower
Stalls, Sinks and Urinals, by means of which it is possible to produce
them in quantities and the plumber to select and order by type and size.
Each one of these types of fixtures is fully described in separate publica-
tions issued by THE STRUCTURAL SLATE COMPANY and known
as Chapters. A complete list of these publications follows :

Each of these chapters is devoted to a specific subject and describes
fully the sizes, parts and arrangements recommended. Each type is fully
set forth and illustrated by drawings and perspectives. Descriptions are
given similar to those in this catalogue and each chapter likewise con-
tains informative data as to the installation of the fixtures and recom-
mendations as to the sizes and types best suited to each different kind of
building. Complete specifications for installations are set forth and the
work of other contractors in preparing for the slate is also described.

Each of these Chapters contains also shop drawings showing how the
fixtures are assembled. Details of the joints and fittings are reproduced
and a drawing showing every part from which these standardized fixtures
are made up are also shown. This detailed information will be found of
value to every Plumber, as well as to the Architect, Contractor and
Owner.

These Chapters have been issued from time to time and have been
distributed among the leading Architects, Engineers and Contractors in
the country, as well as to School Officials, Owners about to build, Build-
ing Managers and any others who, it is felt, may be interested in slate.
These Chapters have done much in having slate specified for new installa-
tions and to replace old and have aided in making the "Pyramid" brand
known and recognized.

THE STRUCTURAL SLATE COMPANY also issues from time to
time stuff ers and folders which may be used by Plumbers in their mail to
help in convincing owners that slate should be more extensively used.
These are distributed at appropriate periods and may also be secured by
application.

THE STRUCTURAL SLATE COMPANY also maintains in lead-
ing cities throughout the United States branch offices as noted on Page 1,
whose duty it is to handle the work of selling and distributing "Pyramid"
Brand products in that territory. This service enables the plumber to
secure prices and other information from the nearest district office with-

out loss of time. Each representative in the field is ready at all times to
serve every Plumber requiring this material, and it is his duty to con-
stantly keep in touch with all consumers and advise them as to prices,
types best suited to the installation and, if necessary, methods of installa-
tion.

THE STRUCTURAL SLATE COMPANY also maintains a com-
plete Service Department at its home office. This department will always
be glad to receive inquiries and to give information and, if necessary, pre-
pare drawings showing installations and methods of application or set-
tings.

Quotations upon slate work of all kinds will always be gladly given
from drawings, specifications or descriptions. This service is entirely at
the disposal of all Plumbers and others who use slate and the Company
will at all times appreciate the opportunity to assist the users of this ma-
terial.

THE STRUCTURAL SLATE COMPANY

DISTRIBUTION OF MATERIAL

The storage facilities of THE STRUCTURAL SLATE COMPANY
are so complete that the quantity of material available for immediate de-
livery is always kept at the highest possible point. This is but another
detail of its service, so that when orders are received for stock fixtures
they may be shipped without delay. Or in the case of special require-
ments and special sizes, as rapidly as they are produced they may be
stored until the shipment is complete, without danger of damage to the
individual portions of the order.

The storage sheds are directly adjacent to a railroad siding, and ship-
ments may be made in carload lots as quickly as the material can be as-
sembled. The Company is also endeavoring to make available its mate-
rial at other points throughout the United States, so that its customers
may be the more promptly served.

A Storage Shed Showing Slate Slabs Ready for Shipment

The points of shipment for the various quarries within this organiza-
tion have all freight rates the same, although the car may start from
Slatington, Bangor, Windgap, Nazareth, Pen Argyl, or wherever the
quarries are located.

All slate packed for shipment in carload lots is carefully stacked
within the car, braced and protected against breakage. In less than car-
load lots the slate is all packed and crated. THE STRUCTURAL
SLATE COMPANY naturally cannot be responsible for the slate after

it leaves their hands, but instructions are always given to have all mate-
rial properly and carefully packed so as to avoid possibility of damage
during shipment.

Should any consumer receive any material in bad shape, report the
situation at once to the agent of the carrier by whom it has been shipped,
so that it may be adjusted, as the responsibility for breakage is up to the
carrier after it has been accepted for shipment. It is the endeavor of the
Company to avoid such complications as much as possible, so that there
will be no danger of delay or expense once the fixture leaves the quarry
where it is produced.

Separate price lists for "Pyramid" Brand products will be issued
from time to time. These should be placed in the pocket provided for
this purpose on the inside rear cover of this catalogue. This price list
will also contain a table of the freight rates from Pen Argyl to the various
possible points of shipment. By using this information the consumer can
estimate closely the cost of delivery of materials over and above the cost
of the fixture itself.

THE STRUCTURAL SLATE COMPANY

SLATE AND ITS USES

It has been authoritatively stated that slate, perhaps more than any
other material, is intimately connected with the life and death of the aver-
age human being. This is due to its widely distributed uses, such as for
the various plumbing fixtures and equipment for the home, the office, the
factory, the public building and the store, as floors, wainscoting, labora-
tory and electrical equipment, and, in death, as the grave vault and as
shelves in the mausoleum.

The slate as it is quarried is separated into three divisions for use as
either roofing, blackboard and structural stock as seems best fitted. To
be economically produced, each quarry should contain stone all of which
may be utilized for at least one of these purposes. In no quarry is there
found slate which is usable for one purpose only and which is com-
mercially workable.

All slate used for structural slate, which includes plumbing fixtures,
is known as "mill stock." In the slate quarries in the Pennsylvania field
there exist geologic formations known as "ribbons" inherent throughout
the stone. Eighty-five per cent of all slate commercially available for
slate products contains these veins, which in no way affect its strength
or usefulness, but which lead to a natural selection and division into the
uses for which each kind is best fitted.

That small portion of slate which is free from ribbons is known as
"clear stock," and is used for blackboards, when slabs sufficiently large
can be secured, and for electrical slate because of the absence of minerals
or carbon substances which would cause leakage of current. Clear stock
is also used where special effects are desired and as Chemical Table tops,
for Aquaria, certain types of sink tops, etc. Because of its greater
scarcity, which requires special selection, it is naturally more expensive
than that large portion containing ribbons and which is known as "rib-
bon stock" to distinguish it from the "clear stock."

As so great a portion of the quarried slate slabs contains the ribbons,
nearly all sanitary or structural slate, except for certain special uses, as
noted above, is made from "ribbon stock." This selection of stock and
division into classifications for each particular use is the reason for the
economic cost of producing plumbing fixtures of natural slate, although
there is absolutely no difference in wearing qualities, strength, surfaces
or finishes between the rarer and more expensive "clear stock" and the
"ribbon stock." Each description of the use of slate will be found to
specifically state the kind of stock and finish of the slabs. Where, in the
text or specifications, mention is not made of the kind, it is intended that
"ribbon stock" be furnished.

Slate is a hard, fine-grained material which will take a smooth, even
surface that cannot be readily scratched or marked. It is in nearly all
cases finished with a "sand-rubbed surface" as illustrated on Page 13.
This is the finish almost entirely mentioned in the descriptions of sanitary
slate fixtures. Whenever the more expensive "honed surface" is desired
or it is felt is better for the purpose, it will be found called for in the de-

12

scription of that particular finish will be in accordance with the illustra-
tion.

Those who are further interested in more fully detailed knowledge
concerning the many uses of slate, how produced and how assembled —
as well as technical knowledge concerning its origin and geologic data,
structure and characteristics, extraction and milling, surfaces and finishes,
etc., and set forth in the Chapters described on Pages 7 and 8, may secure
any of these publications upon application to THE STRUCTURAL
SLATE COMPANY, Pen Argyl, Penna.

Honed Finish

Resistance to wear and tear, sanitary qualities and imperviousness to
water are the outstanding features in the study and selection of any fix-
tures used for plumbing and sanitary purposes. This in addition, of
course, to a proper economy in cost for the specific location where it is
to be used. Slate easily fulfills the most rigid requirements in all of these
respects, as well as being the least expensive of those materials which
combine the many qualifications and special characteristics necessary to
so important a purpose.

13

Slate is sanitary and can also easily be cleaned. When totally
immersed in water for twenty-four hours only 174/1000 of 1 per cent of
water by weight is absorbed, proving that slate will not retain any water
or odors which might otherwise prove detrimental in considering its sani-
tary qualities. , " .„

The strength of slate is such that, with ordinary precaution, it will
resist the wear and tear of a lifetime's use. The slabs can be split to any
thickness desired, the average being from 1 to 1% inches, except for spe-
cial purposes. The thickness of the slabs used in each type of installa-
tion will be found described in connection with the fixture.

While partitions for W.C. Enclosures, Urinal Stalls, Shower Stalls,
Laundry Tubs, Sinks and Sink Tops form perhaps the largest use of
structural slate, it will also be found of extreme value in many other
fields, such as for Stairs, Bases, Wainscots, Caps, Floors, Billiard Table
tops Vats and Tanks, Grave Covers, Crypts and Electric Panel Boards,
as well as in many other miscellaneous uses, some of which are more fully
described in the pages of this publication. A chapter on the use of natural
slate Blackboards and on Sewage Disposal, giving information concern-
ing its installation in both cases, is also included.

W. C. ENCLOSURES OF NATURAL SLATE

W. C. Enclosures of Natural Slate have been used for many years
in all types of buildings. They will be found, particularly if "Pyramid
Brand," to be strong, substantial enclosures, fire-resistive and easily kept
clean and sanitary.

Stock Enclosures are produced in three Types. Type A is the all-
^late type for schools, clubs, public buildings, etc., where the better class
of fixtures is desired. Type B is similar to A, except it has no top rails
of slate. Type C is a more simple type of enclosure, with no slate front
or top rails and is for use where a good economical type of enclosure is
needed. The sizes which have been adopted as standards have been de-
cided upon only after a careful study and investigation of existing en-
closures in all classes of buildings.

DEPTH : It has been found that the majority of enclosures average
4' 0" to 4' 6" in depth. In industrial establishments where large numbers
of workers must be accommodated, 3' 6" has been found of sufficient
depth if without doors. The first two measurements of depth have there-
fore been adopted and are recommended for general use with doors and
the 3' 6" depth for battery types in factories when doors are omitted.

WIDTH: In the measurements taken to determine the width of en-
closures it developed that the width most used is 2' 8" from center to cen-
ter of partition. This was therefore accepted as the first or minimum
standard of width, as experience has shown that it is comfortably spacious
without being too generous of room.

In many types of buildings, a greater
width than 2' 8" is desirable, particularly
where the enclosures are used entirely by
male adults, and for these cases a width
of 2'10" is better. This has therefore been
adopted as the second or maximum stand-
ard for publication in this Chapter. The
widths and depths have been so arranged as to form six differing sizes of
enclosures. These have, for convenience in designating, been given a
size number and are used in conjunction with the types of enclosures as
shown by the accompanying table. This shows each type to which the
sizes are applicable.

On Page 17 is illustrated the methods adopted as standard by THE
STRUCTURAL SLATE COMPANY in the assembling and jointing of
the various types of enclosures, each of which is illustrated and described
on Pages 18 to 35, inclusive.

Page 36 shows a list of the stock sizes of slate slabs which are often
used under the fixture in W. C. Enclosures. On Page 37 will be found a
shop drawing showing how W. C. Enclosures, using Type B-2 as a basis,
are assembled.

More complete detailed information concerning the standardization
of W. C. Enclosures, their use, etc., may be secured from Chapter 5 of
the Series on Structural Slate, which may be obtained from THE
STRUCTURAL SLATE COMPANY.

THE

STRUCTURAL

SLATE

COMPANY

URINAL STALLS OF NATURAL SLATE

Urinal Stalls of Natural Slate have long formed one of the most widely used
products of the slate industry. Resistance to moisture, toughness, non-expansion,
cleanliness and color recommend it for use as urinals, which form one of the chief
problems of present-day sanitary installations.

In considering the sizes and types of urinals which could be economically and
continuously produced to fulfill all requirements, it was decided that five varying
types should be kept in stock. Each type can be secured with or without vent
space in the back. Type A is for use with separate urinal bowls. Type B is an
all-slate type, with sloping water-flushed back, fluted slate floor and slate gutter.
Type C is similar to Type B, except that it is without partitions, being furnished
in suitable lengths for factories or public installations. Type DV is a special type
of urinal somewhat similar to Type B, except that there is a trough of slate at the
top with serrated edges, from which the water flushes the backs. Type E is of a
single corner urinal arranged to receive separate corner urinal bowl.

It will be noted that but one height is shown for all the Types, whereas here-
tofore there have been listed and shown three heights of urinals. Similarly but
one width is provided for, it having been demonstrated by measurements taken in
all kinds of buildings throughout the country that more width than 24", center to
center of partitions is an extravagance warranted only where quarters are luxurious
and that less width involves cramped accommodations for simultaneous use by
adults.

A lessened width, however, may be and frequently is adopted, as in the case of
schools or buildings where young persons will use the equipment. Rather than
complicate the standards it has been provided in the suggested specification that
lessened widths may be obtained where desired by calling for same as a variation
from the standard. If urinal stalls are placed back to back specify the type de-
sired, and any modification necessitated will be shown by special shop drawings.

Fluted floor slabs have been determined upon for all urinals in this Chapter
and are shown in all cases level with the finished floor, the standardization would
be in no wise affected (except at AV ends) if it is desired to set the slab with its
bottom level with the floor or on a raised platform or step. When this practice is
followed, consideration should be given to the matter of a separate drain outlet
in the floor if it is not desired to drain that floor into the gutter of the urinals,

While all gutters are illustrated and detailed to be of Slate, a metal gutter is
shown among "Fittings and Trimmings" and may be specified as a departure from
the standardization.

Details of the standardized jointing of slabs, construction, etc., of all types are
shown on Page 39. Each type is separately illustrated and described on Pages 40
to 47, inclusive. More complete detailed information in regard to the standardiza-
tion of Urinal Stalls, sizes, types, specifications and their installation under vary-
ing conditions may be secured from Chapter 6 of a Series on Structural Slate,
which may be obtained on application to THE STRUCTURAL SLATE COM-
PANY.

SHOWER STALLS OF NATURAL SLATE

Investigation of the various types of Shower Stalls existing in differ-
ent kinds of buildings, such as Public Comfort Stations, Industrial estab-
lishments, Schools, Colleges and where batteries of Showers are installed
has developed the fact that there are many slight variations from three
basic sizes. By definitely fixing in advance the length of rooms or wall
spaces to accommodate a fixed and definite size of Shower Stall, it is felt
that all the advantage of economy in the use of materials is gained with-
out in any way affecting the construction of the building or its essential
parts.

Three variations were finally adopted, namely : Size No. 1 — 3' 0" x

3' 0" ; Size No. 2—3' 0" x 3' 6" ; and Size No. 3—3' 6" x 3' 6" ; all dimensions

being to the points indicated on plans. The smallest size for minors is

not too crowded for simultaneous adult use and the largest size affords

Size no. width Depth Type ample comfortable accommodations

1 3' 0" 3' 0" A for any adult. The accompanying

2 3' 0" 3' 6" ABCDE table shows the sizes in which each

3 3' 6" 3' 6" BCDE type is standardized.

One height only was determined upon, that being 6' 6" from floor to
top of slate. Above the slate is furnished a nickel-plated brass bar for cur-
tains and as a stiffener for partitions.

In order to meet the demand for showers in all classes of buildings,
including industrial establishments, five types were decided upon.

TYPE A consists of slate slabs forming backs, ends and partitions,
with slate floors, for use where space is limited and requirements as to
splashing of water on floors are not exacting. This type insures the great-
est economy in cost.

TYPE B is similar to Type A except that the addition of the curb at
the bottom is a precaution against water from the shower running out
over the floor.

TYPE C is a development of Type B with stiles placed on either side
of the front extending to the top of the partitions,

TYPES D AND E were developed to fill the requirement for a com-
bination shower and dressing room. Type D contains a separate dressing
room for each shower, while Type E has only shower between each two
dressing rooms. In both types each dressing room has a slate seat, with
a slate stile and curb between the dressing room and shower.

LEAD PANS : All of the showers have been so arranged that they
can be used either with or without lead or metal pans. The drawings
opposite the description of each type show no lead pans, but separate
drawings on Page 59 show the details for the use of pans with every
type. Provision for accommodating the lead or metal work is made by
the simple addition of covering pieces of slate, and, in Types B, C, D and
E, by the position of the curb. If showers are ordered without and it is
subsequently found that a pan is desirable or essential, the additional slate
covering pieces can be shipped separately.

Slate floors are shown in all of the types, finished flush with the
floors of rooms. All may be raised on platforms or the floors slightly de-
pressed without affecting the standardization. In Types D and E the
dressing room floors are indicated as of the floor of the room, which floor
may be continuously laid before the slabs are erected, or a slate floor may
be separately ordered if desired.

"PYRAMID BRAND" SLATE LAVATORY TOPS

Lavatory tops of natural slate are mostly used in Industrial establishments
where it is necessary to have a material which resists wear and tear to an unusual
extent and which may be easily kept clean and sanitary. They are used over
enameled iron basins, with holes cut to size to suit basin which is securely fastened
to the bottom of the slate top.

Slate Lavatory Tops are made of 1" to l%" thickness slate countersunk, of size
required by dimensions of top and number of openings. Backs and ends, if speci-
fied, are of slate, 1" thick, with chamfered top and ends. Openings are cut to suit
size and type of fixture used.

Unless otherwise specified, Lavatory Tops will be furnished in Ribbon stock
with all exposed surfaces Standard Sand Rubbed and with all arrises or sharp cor-
ners finished smooth.

All prices on Lavatory Tops are made up special in accordance with size and
requirements and will include all angles, screws, bolts and nuts required for con-
struction, but no basins, faucets, or other plumbing equipment and accessories.
These may be separately ordered from this catalogue.

FITTINGS

Successful Structural Slate installations, whether for Toilet Enclo-
sures, Shower Stalls, Urinal Stalls, Sinks, Wash Trays, or the many other
uses, are greatly dependent upon metal parts generally described as "Fit-
tings" and "Trimmings." Under these heads are the angles, stirrups,
bolts, nuts and supports for the slate slabs, the hardware in connection
with doors and other movable features, and accessories of various kinds.

The fittings illustrated and priced herein have been carefully selected
from those made by different manufacturers.

It must not, however, be assumed that these fittings are the only ones
obtainable. There is no desire to limit any one to these kinds, as it often
happens that other types of fittings may be desirable for specific purposes.
The fittings shown herein are those which experience has developed as
the best suited, reasonably priced fittings for the use to which they are to
be put and accordingly they have been accepted as standards by THE
STRUCTURAL SLATE COMANY, and are kept in stock at the various
distributing centers of the Company for immediate delivery. They are
here offered as a means of simplifying the selection and installation of
slate equipment.

Wherever fittings are used in connection with slate installations it
is highly desirable that they should be fitted at the mill and that all holes
should be drilled by machinery before shipment in order to insure proper
erection at the place of installation. For this reason the prices herein
listed illustrating complete slate installations where angles, supports, or
other fittings are a necessary part of the completed work, will always in-
clude the drilling of holes for such fittings and also the fittings themselves
to the number mentioned or required for proper construction.

In addition to the necessary fittings required for supporting and for
fastening the various parts of the installation together, there are also spe-
cial fittings or trimmings desirable or required for the completion of other
portions of the work. This applies to such items as soap cups, towel
racks, hinges or butts for wood or metal doors, etc.

Where it is desired that such accessories, trimmings or fittings be
furnished in connection with the slate, this can be done by THE STRUC-
TURAL SLATE COMPANY, which will thereupon become responsible
for the correct drilling of the holes to properly receive screws, bolts, etc.
In this book, therefore, in addition to the types of fittings essential to
proper support and construction, are also shown other kinds of fittings
and trimmings of the types which have been selected as being among the
best of their respective kinds for varied uses and which will be kept in
stock for immediate delivery. There is a decided advantage in having
these furnished by THE STRUCTURAL SLATE COMPANY, in order
that each metal part may be properly drilled for and fitted before being
shipped with the slate ready for installation in a minimum of time.

SLATE VATS AND TANKS

In industrial estab-
lishments where small
tanks are required con-
taining a liquid mate-
rial which may be used
in dyeing, cleaning, rins-
ing, or for any of the
numerous other manu-
facturing purposes, the
use of a permanent
waterproof material
such as slate is highly
desirable. In this con-
nection, again the non-
absorptive quality of
slate makes it peculiarly
well fitted for this pur-
pose.
In tanks of small size, such as shown by the accompanying drawing, the bot-
toms and ends are let into the sides and all slabs are set in waterproof cement,
which makes them entirely watertight. The tanks may be readily moved from
one position to another without injury, and, as is the case with all slate, can be
easily cleaned. The thickness of the slate varies from 1" to \y 2 " depending upon
the size of the tanks.

AQUARIA

Slate table tops with aquaria built directly on top are much used in labora-
tories of educational buildings, hospitals, public aquaria and houses or other places
for the exhibit of fish, plants or aquatic specimens in water.

Due to the fact that it resists the action of water and is clean and sanitary,
slate is an excellent material for the construction of this equipment. The bottom

and ends of the aquarium would be made of slate and the sides of heavy glass let
into the slate. Bolts would be run from end to end, firmly securing the ends and
sides. The drawing shows the aquarium divided into two sections with a screen
in the center. The fresh water empties into one side and drains out through the
other. The table top is also shown as of slate.

LABORATORY TABLE TOPS

In consid-
e r i n g special
furniture for
laboratories in
buildings of all
kinds and for
work of all
character, the
tops upon
which the
work is to be
performed re-
quire a sub-
stance on
which the ex-
periments may
be made with-
out damage to
either the top
or to the ma-
terials used in
the work. The
excellent qual-
ities of slate are such as to especially recommend this material for such locations.
In the special combination cabinet and top with the swinging seats, shown in
the drawing, the top is of slate 1" or 1*4" thick. It may have either Sand Rubbed
or Honed finish as desired. The sink in the center is also constructed of slate
with the bottom let into the sides. This is but an example of the many types
of laboratory equipment in connection with which the use of slate would be ad-
vantageous.

MOISTURE AND SPECIMEN CABINETS

Cabinets made of slate with slate doors and slate shelves are especially well
fitted for use in laboratories where the storage of delicate instruments and speci-
mens either directly on the shelves or in glass bottles or tubes is necessary. Be-
cause of its non-
staining qualities and
because it is so easily
cleaned, slate makes
an exceptionally suit-
able material for this
purpose. The draw-
ings show a cabinet
such as is now being
used in the Bureau
of Standards, Wash-
ington, D. C. It is
constructed of 1"
slate slabs with Y%"
slate shelves sup-
ported upon N. P.
brass angles. The
doors are also of
slate and the hard-
ware is directly
screwed or bolted to
the same.

SLATE STAIRWAYS

There are certain properties inherent
in slate that as a result its use as the ma-
terial for treads and risers of stairs in
buildings requiring resistance to fire and
to wear has increased to a very great ex-
tent during recent years. Slate is non-
combustible, sanitary and requires no
paint or upkeep. It is easily cleaned, free
from dust, and, to the fullest extent pos-
sible in any material, anti-slip and wear-
proof.

Slate may be readily used in conjunc-
tion with any other material, either of
construction or finish. The upper illus-
tration shows a stairway constructed of
steel, with cast iron or steel plates as ris-
ers, and with the treads and the wall string and the landing platforms en-
tirely of slate. This stairway is constructed in a modern fireproof school
building, and has given excellent service.

The lower illustration shows a slate stairway in which both risers
and treads are of this material. This stairway is located in a theater and
is built with reinforced concrete construction. The wall string and other
architectural treatments are entirely in marble, but due to its greater re-
sistance to wear and tear, and the ease with which it may be kept clean,

slate was used for both the treads and
risers and landing platforms.

Slate treads and risers may be used
in various combinations, with varying
methods of construction. The most com-
monly used are reinforced concrete and
steel, in either of which the treads alone,
or both treads and risers are finished
with slate. Complete detailed informa-
tion showing methods of construction
and the thickness and suggested meth-
ods of using the slate itself are shown in
a special publication issued by THE
STRUCTURAL SLATE COMPANY
at Pen Argyl, Pa.

SLATE CAPS AND BASES

The possibilities in the use of slate as caps
and bases for walls or wainscots or to form a
finish between the floor and the sidewalk are al-
most unlimited. The slate may be secured in
almost any thickness or shape,
and it may be molded if so
specified.

The detail of caps shown
illustrates a plain 1%" x 4" slate
cap over wainscoting of the
same or other material.
The detail of cove base is an illustration of a cus-
tomary type of finish used between floors and walls. The
cove base not only forms an excellent finish for appear-
ance, but is a practical method of finishing the wainscot-
ing or plaster of any wall.

SLATE WAINSCOTING AND FLOORS

There is no better material than slate for use either as wainscoting
or floors, either by itself or in combination with other materials, where
there is a necessity for resistance to the constant wear and tear of many
persons. The illustration shows a slate wainscoting with molded

cap and cove base, with a mar-
ble band directly under the
cap. The floor is of large
slate squares alternating with
squares of small tiles.

Varying types of wain-
scots and floors are illustrated
in Chapter 9 of the Series on
Structural Slate, which may be
had upon application.

BORDERS FOR
REGISTER FACES

There should be
around all register faces
a fire resistive non-
shrinkable material to
receive the faces them-
selves. The details on
this page show how slate,
which fulfills all of these
qualifications, may be
used in such locations,

Slate may also be
safely used as chimney
caps and in other loca-
tions where resistance to
fire is essential.

RANGE HEARTHS
AND BACKS

One of the greatest
dangers from fire in any
house, no matter how
well constructed, is at
the points directly sur-
rounding ranges and
stoves. All well con-
structed houses should
have some protection at
the back and sides
against walls and under
the range at the floor.
Slate is fire resistive, and
at the same time easily
cleaned and vermin
proof, which combina-
tion forms an ideal ma-
terial for such an instal-
lation.

Slate may also be
used as fireplace facings
and hearths.

Slate slabs, either
plain or countersunk,
may be properly used un-
der radiators in order to
protect the floor from the
dripping which almost
invariably occurs at radi-
ators. The slate also can
be easily kept clean and,
as it will not shrink, al-
ways offers a level, true
surface for the radiator.

Where radiators are
recessed in walls and un-
der windows, slate slabs

and sill also of slate,
make a complete sani-

SLATE SHELVING

The use of slate as
shelving in pantr y,
kitchen, cold room, or
storeroom gives a ma-
terial which will not
swell or discolor from
dampness, and which
can be easily kept clean
and is sanitary and ver-

It may be used in
various methods, sup-

Grooved and Bolted Vault

GRAVE COVERS, VAULTS AND MAUSOLEUM CRYPTS

It has been found that slate, per-
haps more than any other material, ful-
fills all requirements for burial pur-
poses. Tests for absorption and
strength show that its resistance to
water, together with its permanence
and immunity to acids or alkalies in the
surrounding earth, make it a material
which is indestructible under the
ground and in places containing exces-
sive moisture or condensation. Its nat-
ural strength and toughness are such
that it resists the pressure of the sur-
rounding earth. Slate is absolutely
vermin proof. When sealed in position, the vaults and crypts of natural
slate are entirely airtight.

Slate has been used over 2500 years, as was recently authentically
determined by excavations of primitive English graves. These excava-
tions showed that slate used for the lining of graves is still in a perfect
state of preservation even though buried under the soil for twenty-five
centuries.

THE STRUCTURAL SLATE
COMPANY has constantly in stock
numerous sizes of the plain and
grooved and bolted vaults illustrated on
this page, as well as slate slabs which
are used as grave covers over grave
vaults with the floor and walls of brick,
concrete or other material. The ease
in handling slate by unskilled labor is a
tremendous economic advantage over
nearly any other material.

The lower illustration shows a de-
tail of slate floors and linings to form
crypts in a mausoleum. This material
is used because of its strength and non-
staining qualities, and can be produced
in any size or shape to fit the individual
design.

Slate Sewage Disposal Tank

SEWAGE DISPOSAL

In recent years, in the building of small houses where public sewers
are not available, there has grown an increasing use of small sewage dis-
posal plants instead of the construction of large cesspools. The small
sewage disposal tank with its overflow and tile drainage causes all sewage
to disintegrate, due to the action of microbes.

There are various materials used in the construction of such sewage
disposal tanks, and there is none which is better than natural slate, be-
cause of its many natural qualifications for use below ground. Being in
no way affected by conditions of moisture or by any chemicals, alkalies
or acids in the surrounding soil, it will last for centuries when properly
placed in position and sealed airtight. There is, therefore, no disturbance
of the natural bacterial action of the solids which might be caused by the
absorption of surface moisture. Fully detailed information showing the
sizes of sewage disposal tanks of slate and the method for determining
the size to be used may be had upon application to the Home Office.

NATURAL SLATE FOR BLACKBOARDS

There is perhaps no one portion in the equipment of a school build-,
ing which is of more importance than the writing surface placed upon the
walls, and which is constantly used by teachers and pupils from the day
of entry into school until graduation years after. By reason of its con-
stant use this surface must be of such a nature that the strain upon the
eyes of those in the room is minimized to the least extent. The even,
smooth black surface and color of natural slate forms such a background.
The constantly increasing use of natural slate as the result of years
of investigation and its adoption by the school boards of the leading cities
and towns in the United States is an indication of the fact that there is no
other material which gives such satisfactory service.

The problem, therefore, is the purchase of this material from the
source of supply, which guarantees to the consumer that selection of
stock which assures securing the best material available. In Bulletin 586
entitled "Slate in the United States," issued by the U. S. Geological Sur-
vey, T. Nelson Dale
says : "While nearly
all of the slates of
the United States
possess one or two
excellent features,
few possess many
such features and
none possess them
all. Several are so
conspicuous for
their well-nigh per-
fect adaptation to
certain uses that
the demand for
them is likely to in-
crease with the
growth of the coun-
try. Such are the
blackboard slates of
the 'soft-vein' re-
gion of Pennsyl-
vania."

with the "Pyramid Brand" comes from the region described.

In addition to this selection of only that material which is best suited
for the purpose and the use of only the highest skilled workmanship,
THE STRUCTURAL SLATE COMPANY is able through its allied
organization, The Natural Slate Blackboard Company, to offer its cus-

The Natural Slate Blackboard Company has also made an exhaustive
study of methods of installation of slate, and has issued a standard speci-
fication for slate blackboards and for their correct setting.

This is contained in a Chapter entitled "Natural Slate for Black-

SLATE FOR ELECTRICAL USES

THE STRUCTURAL SLATE COMPANY has recently issued a
publication "Slate for Electrical Uses," being Chapter 12 of a Series on

Structural
Slate. This is
the first time
that data con-

of slate which
make it espe-

electric machinery and appa-
ratus have ever been compiled
and published in a readily ac-
cessible form for designing en-
gineers and constructors.

This publication was is-
sued due to the constantly in-
creasing use of slate as a mate-
rial upon which electrical ap-
paratus and instruments may
be mounted. The tests above
referred to show that slate ful-
fills all conditions of toughness,
elasticity, ability to stand the
shock, ease of drilling, low per-
centage of absorption, and non-
combustibility, as well as re-
sistance to electrical proper-
ties, which make it highly de-
sirable for this purpose. Clear
stock only is used for the
mounting of electrical appa-
ratus, as freedom from metallic
veins is an essential require-
ment.

Slate slabs of any size and
thickness to suit the require-
ments of consumers may be
produced without a delay by
THE STRUCTURAL SLATE
COMPANY, due ttf its enor-
mous quarrying facilities. On
this page are shown only two
of the hundreds of possible uses
of slate in the electrical field.

THE STRUCTURAL SLATE COMPANY

SPECIFICATIONS

THE STRUCTURAL SLATE COMPANY submits herewith, for
the use of those who desire a brief form of specifications for installations
of Structural Slate Plumbing Fixtures. For the other installations of
Slate, such as Stairways, Floors, Wainscots, Caps and Bases, Chemical
and Miscellaneous Uses, Blackboards, etc., refer to the various chapters
in which these uses are described. Any or all of these may be obtained
upon application to THE STRUCTURAL SLATE COMPANY, Pen
Argyl, Penna.

The Service Department of THE STRUCTURAL SLATE COM-
PANY is at all times ready to assist in any problem of slate installation,
furnishing necessary details and recommendations.

In these specifications it will be found that the type of installations
refers in all cases to the individual Chapters. There is no difference in the
Type, Number, Size and Arrangement of any of the fixtures between
those in the Chapters and in this Catalogue. The space in the Chapters
being greater, it allows a more complete description of each type of instal-
lation and the Chapters are therefore used as a basis for the specification.
Type AA Toilet Enclosure in Chapter 5 is exactly the same as Type AA
shown and illustrated on Page 19 of this catalogue.

Chapter 2 of the Series on Structural Slate contains General Condi-
tions which are applicable to all forms of slate installations. It is repro-
duced here in full, but it is not necessary to be repeated in its entirety, the
short form occurring in Paragraph 15 being all that is needed, due to the
wide distribution of the Chapters among Architects.

GENERAL CONDITIONS: (See Paragraph 16 for abbreviated form)

(1) Furnish all labor, materials, tools and appliances necessary for
the execution and completion of the work in accordance with this speci-
fication except as the same may be modified in any way by the architect's
drawings or specifications, in which case the architect's drawings and
specifications shall govern.

(2) The General Conditions of the specification written by the archi-
tect are hereby made a part of this Basic Specification and of the contract
for the Structural Slate work.

(3) WORK INCLUDED: For extent of work, and for the grade
and finish of Structural Slate, see the architect's drawings and specifica-
tions — and schedule, if any is furnished.

(4) ACCEPTANCE OF PREPARATORY WORK: It shall be the
duty of the Structural Slate contractor before beginning any of his work
to examine all floor and wall construction and any other supports for his
work provided by others, and satisfy himself that everything is in proper
condition to receive his work. The architect shall be notified by the
Structural Slate contractor in writing of any exception he may take to
such construction. Failure to do so shall constitute acceptance of the
construction by the Structural Slate contractor as suitable in all ways to
receive his work.

(5) SAMPLES: If so required, typical samples, each marked as to
grade and finish of slate proposed to be used, shall be submitted to the
architect for approval, and left with him, before material is ordered.

(6) QUALITY AND FINISH : All slate hereafter specified shall be
dark blue-gray (black if oil finished) in color, hard and non-absorbent,
whole, sound and free from irregularities in production or defects in
manufacture, and of the commercial grading known as Ribbon Stock, ex-
cept where Clear Stock may be specifically called for, or is customarily
furnished.

(7) All slate used shall be branded with the trade-mark "Pyramid,"
exposed surfaces shall be smooth and free from depressions, loose pieces,
cracks, or chipped edges, and all shall be left in true alignment and in
every respect thoroughly neat and satisfactory.

(8) All exposed surfaces, unless honed finish is specifically called for,
shall have standard sand-rubbed finish.

(9) After complete erection and pointing, every piece of slate, except
water-flushed backs of urinals, floors or parts of stairways noted, shall be
finally treated with raw linseed oil, thinned with turpentine, unless other-
wise specifically mentioned, and all shall be left clean and complete.

(10) ERECTION: Each piece of standing slate against any wall or
partition shall be properly backed up at the edges or joints with cement
mortar or plaster of Paris, according to the space, and anchored in place
in such manner as to insure its remaining firm and rigid. No piece to
have less than two anchors, which shall be (galvanized, or brass, or
bronze), so placed as to be concealed, and where of wire, not less than
No. 12 W. and M. gauge.

(11) Where space back of slate against masonry walls is more than
2", brick in cement mortar shall be applied back of all joints. Any inter-
mediate joints necessary in slate slabs shall be of the kind specified for
the corner or abutting joints in the same piece of work and thoroughly
filled with the same packing material ; if showing, the joints must be true,
close and smooth.

(12) All slabs, partitions, stiles, curbs, bases, treads or other pieces
of slate, shall be erected, fastened together or secured in place in a first-
class manner and left rigid and complete, to the satisfaction of the archi-
tect or his representative.

(13) Joints or external angles shall be made on the side least exposed
to view. All external angles and all exposed edges or corners shall be
slightly rounded, unless otherwise shown on drawings, or specified. The
contractor for slate shall do any cutting or drilling of slate for all other
trades, and for anything that is to be connected or attached to slate.

(14) Before any work is placed in the mill, two copies of shop or set-
ting drawings shall, if required by the architect, be submitted to him for
approval of the general principles involved in construction. Such ap-
proval, when given, with any corrections required, unless taken exception
to by the contractor in writing, shall not relieve the contractor of obliga-
tions as to rigidity of construction, correctness of sizes and measurements,

(i) All floor slabs shall be securely and solidly bedded in mortar
composed of one volume of cement, one volume of lime and six volumes
of sand on foundations furnished by other Contractors. All joints shall
be made and slabs secured in accordance with Pyramid Standard details.
Joints shall be set with a full packing of glycerine and litharge or ap-
proved waterproof cement colored with lamp black.

NOTE: (j) If shower floor slabs are set over wooden joists provide under
Carpenter Work how preparation shall be made for receiving concrete founda-
tions. In any case provide under appropriate Section of the Specification for the
construction of such foundations formed ready to require only the slate setter's
mortar bed.

NOTE: (k) Specify that the desired kinds of shower heads, valves, curtains
and hooks shall be furnished by the Plumbing Contractor and that all piping of
every description for supplies shall be done by him as a part of the Plumbing
Work. Heads, valves and curtains may be selected from Chapter 4 and specified
accordingly.

NOTE: (1) Specify that the Plumbing Contractor shall set and connect to
the double drainage drain with which all showers are equipped, furnishing and in-
stalling all such other drainage requirements in accordance with the remainder of
the specification, as are not regularly furnished with the showers as described in
connection with Pyramid Standards.

NOTE: (m) Where lead pans are to be used specify that plumber is to
furnish lead of weight desired and fit and set same in position properly connected
to the drain ready for setting of slate floor slabs.

NOTE: (n) The slate work of all enclosures, as provided by General Con-
ditions, will be finished by the Contractor erecting the slate work, with one coat of

(o) The slate work of all enclosures shall be left free of oil and ready
to be finished by the Contractor for painting. (Under painting specify
that all slate work of toilet enclosures shall be given three coats of white
lead and oil paint of color selected.)

not shown in this Chapter, the following form is suggested:

(q) [Same as Paragraph (c) to end and add] except that size of
shower stalls shall be

IN CONCLUSION : If it is desired to set any enclosures directly on
any floor this may be done by omitting the slate floor slab. If to be set
directly upon a slate base or cove, or a cove of tile, cement or other ma-
terial with which the floor may be surfaced, this will require special men-
tion in the specifications, and separate detailing.

LAUNDRY TUBS AND SINKS: In the majority of cases it is
probable that Laundry Tubs, Sinks and Sink Tops are specified under
"Plumbing" in conjunction with the balance of the Plumbing fixtures.
Where there is considerable slate work, such as W. C. Enclosures, Shower
Stalls or Urinals, it is possible that they may be included with that por-
tion of the work.

In either case, the same form of specification may be used, except
that the plumbing supplies should be included within the plumbing work
even though the slate is separately furnished by a slate contractor. The
brief form of this General Condition, together with more detailed data as
to the specifying of slate work may be used if desired. Otherwise the fol-
lowing suggested form is sufficient for Laundry Tubs, Sinks and Sink
Tops.
